ISHINOMAKI, Miyagi -- A volunteer here collecting children's tsunami-related compositions received a set of drawings from two boys who lost their mother to the March 11 tsunami that depicted their feelings through pictures and words.

Gaishi Itakura, 11, and his 8-year-old brother Soshi, made three compositions. Soshi handled the pictures, using crayons on drawing paper, while Gaishi wrote messages on the back. In his drawings, Soshi represented the tsunami as a Tyrannosaurus dinosaur, or monster, attacking the town.

The boys' mother was taken by the tsunami while heading home in a car. A possible depiction of this, or a drawing of another victim, can be seen in the third drawing, where a person being swallowed by the tsunami is yelling out, "Help!"

On the back of the artwork, Gaishi wrote messages such as, "Stupid tsunami," and "My mom died because of the tsunami, but I won't give up."

The works were collected by volunteer Kunihiko Kanaya, 65, of Sumida Ward, Tokyo. An instructor at public elementary schools in Bunkyo Ward, Tokyo, for around 20 years, he has performed old picture plays like "Ogon Bat" (golden bat) at street events and other occasions since November 2009. From April 27 to May 1, he gave picture plays at four shelters in Ishinomaki as a volunteer.

When he encouraged the elementary and junior-high school students he met to express their feelings through pictures or words, the Itakura brothers responded. He also received 18 hand-written messages. They showed appreciation for help from around the country, with messages like, "Thank you for cheering us up so much," and "I used to cry a lot, but thanks to everyone's support, now I can smile again."

He has collected a total of around 30 childrens' works, including picture plays and other drawings about the tsunami.

"I was prepared to be told 'Now isn't the time for something like picture-book plays' and rejection, but I wasn't and the children enjoyed them," says Kanaya. "I definitely want to let children in Tokyo see how things are in disaster-hit areas."
