03/07 The Princess bride: Monaco comes to a standstill as stunning Charlene and Prince Albert exchange vows in religious ceremony

  • VIP guests include Karl Lagerfeld, Naomi Campbell, Roger Moore and Giorgio Armani
  • Princess Charlene wears Giorgio Armani silk gown, covered in 40,000 Swarovski crystals

The happy both couple both answered 'oui' (yes) to the Archbishop of Monaco, Bernard Barsi, who conducted the service in front of 850 guests.

A day after the civil wedding that transformed one-time Olympic swimmer Charlene Wittstock into the Princess of Monaco, the South African and her prince, Albert II exchanged vows in the religious ceremony yesterday.
Wearing an off-the-shoulder Armani dress, the new Princess Charlene on Monaco looked serene and beautiful as she wed Prince Albert in the courtyard of the Prince's Palace.

The palace said the stunning gown took Armani's team 2,500 hours to prepare, of which 700 hours was spent on the embroidery alone, using 'kilometres' of platinum-coated thread sewn into 130 metres of off-white silk.
The gown would have been heavy for the new Princess, as she would have had to carry the weight of 40,000 Swarovski crystals, 20,000 mother of pearl tear drops and 30,000 'stones in gold shades'.
The dress's crowning glory was the five-metre long train made from 20 metres of silk tulle, which took 100 hours to make.

The groom looked smart in a cream summer uniform of Monaco’s palace guards, with his sleeves embroidered with oak and olive leave.
Accompanying the bride was her maid-of-honour Donatella Knecht de Massy and seven young bridesmaids from around Monaco and neighbouring French districts wearing traditional taffeta red and white outfits and straw hats.
During the service, the couple exchanged 18-carat white gold platinum rings by Cartier, with Princess Charlene laughing as she placed the ring on her husband's finger.

The blonde beauty died in a car crash nearly 30 years ago, and this tiny principality on the Riviera has been without a princess ever since.
Known as a notorious ladies man, 53-year-old Albert long eschewed marriage, and many Monegasques had resigned themselves to forever having a bachelor prince.
The constitution was even modified to ensure the continuity of the Grimaldi line, one of Europe's oldest dynasties, in case Albert never produced an heir.
The prince acknowledged having fathered two children out of wedlock, but only his legitimate offspring would be able to succeed him. Rumours have swirled in recent days that a third illegitimate child had surfaced - prompting Charlene to allegedly try to call off the wedding and return to South Africa days before the festivities.

The palace has denied the reports, dismissing them as ‘ugly rumours’ prompted by spite and jealousy.
Charlene, 33, has told interviewers she would like to have children.
Only Monaco's fewer than 8,000 citizens and their partners were allowed access to the Rocher, the rocky promontory presided over by the palace, to follow Saturday's service on two giant screens.

I thought the dress was a triumph. She has massive shoulders as one would expect, being an Olympic swimmer but Armani very cleverly styled the dress around this fact making a feature of the shoulders while flattering them at the same time. Elegant and beautiful.

She is truly beautiful and elegant, the perfect princess - I'm not surprised Albert didn't want her to leave him! Her dress is gorgeous and I love the way she styled her hair. But I really wish she could have looked happier. We're told Albert's mother wasn't happy in Monaco, that she felt trapped there, so I hope the same doesn't happen to Charlene. If Albert has even a little bit of common sense, he'll realise he's found the right person and stay faithful to her and try to make her happy. I wish them both every happiness.

Charlene looked millions of time more elegant than Kate who is the daughter of a air hostess and grand dauhter of a lorry driver and great grand daughter of a coal miner and it shows......that's why she smiles all the time commoners do you know but Charlene is composed..... - Catherine , London. And Monaco, 2/7/2011 21: You utter snob. If you really live in Monaco, which I doubt, you are living proof of the old adage that money can't buy class.

Such a beautiful girl, the loveliest wedding dress imaginable,a high profile and glamorous wedding and she's a champion swimmer! She seems very refined , without airs and graces, but she will have her work cut out marrying into The Grimaldi Family. They've all been round the block a few times and are a bit spoilt .Wishing them both a long and happy life.

I agree with Susanna, Germany, Her lip is botoxed. So for all who are saying she isn't happy, she's not smiling-it's because SHE CAN'T. Her mouth is frozen. I said so earlier but my comment didn't get posted. So she may be very happy inside, but outside she can't show it. Compare her to Kate, who is happy and glowing when she smiles-thin lips and all.

As a Canadian I find it quite insulting that Kate is wearing second time around dresses on the Royal Tour. One thing to recycle for smaller events but not on tour. The purple dress was the wrong style for a chignon and look cheap. - Helen, Vancouver, Canada, 2/7/2011 22:44 As a Brit, I find it insulting that you expect the Duchess to unnecessarily spend OUR money on clothes when she has lots of new ones that are perfectly suitable. She is doing absolutely the right thing during a recession and the purple dress looked great. P.S. Why don't you move to Quebec with all the other Royal haters?

Poor woman. Imprisoned for life in a gilded cage with an incontinent adulterer. What a sad contrast with the happy love match of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. I hope that she can find a way to be happy, or at least a way out.

A very beautiful, reserved young woman in an exquisitely designed dress for her figure and style. No necklace, no earrings, no tiara, no jewelry whatsoever to detract from her clean cut beauty. How different and refreshing. Why people compare this blonde, athletic, young woman with Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, is beyond me. Two different women from very different backgrounds marrying into very different dynastic families. One the blonde, delicate beauty, marrying a much older man, head of a small, albeit wealthy Principality. The other a stunning, self assured brunette slated to be Queen of England who married her college sweetheart, her own age. They both were beautiful brides in their own way. This is wishing them both great happiness for many years to come.

What a sad, hypocritical day. The bride looked so unhappy - but as she is effectively a prisoner with no passport to escape, she has every right to be unhappy. - Lynda Mitchell, West sussex, 2/7/2011 23:00 If she looked unhappy (which she didn't) it's probably because of all the daft stories that gullible people like you believe.

She looked beautiful but I agree with most comments that she looked very sad....I think there has been so much glorification of the "princess life" or the "glamour life" in all of western culture and media in the past 20 years (i.e. princess Diana) that you wonder if these young women really know what they are getting into? they all seem to be trying too hard to be a character in a role and live out a persona or become an icon rather then living authentically...icons never set out to be icons...

Now that's what I call a royal wedding gown - absolutely gorgeous - so much classier than the other disney bride creation of April 29! As a Canadian I find it quite insulting that Kate is wearing second time around dresses on the Royal Tour. One thing to recycle for smaller events but not on tour. The purple dress was the wrong style for a chignon and look cheap. - Helen, Vancouver, Canada, 2/7/2011 17:44============================================== Helen, that's how they (and their subjects in Britain) view Canada. Just wait and see what will happen in the USA tour. She's probably saving all the new and expensive dresses & jewellery for Los Angeles. There will be more effort and attention put into the American tour, even if it's for only 3 days and in only one city. That should tell something to the shameless Canadians who have been lining up to grovel for these two right now.

"Just hear me out. Mrs Middleton KNEW what course William was doing in St. Andrews and sent Kate on the same course... I wonder why the other two went to Edinburgh? It was a complete set up by the social-climbing Middletons. "- Anon, Anon, 2/7/2011 21:16 ########################## And you know this because??? - Assegai, Oxford, 2/7/2011 Perhaps it's because it's a known fact and has been widely reported in articles and books about Kate and her family that Kate was originally set to attend Edinburgh University until her mother got wind of Prince WIlliam enrolling at St. Andrews and strongly persuaded and convinced her daughter to switch universities, never mind enrolling Kate in the same course and dormitory as William. Someone close to the Middleton family also stated that Carole Middleton should have a Masters Degree in Social Engineering, which was also reported by the DM. The woman could teach a class on social climbing seeing how she orchestrated Kate's climb into the RF.

Such a beautiful bride but with such a sad sweetness without any of the radiance she should have had on her wedding day. One could imagine, this is what a lamb to slaughter would look like. Princess Charlene is much younger and prettier with a far more elegant and tasteful wedding dress than our own lovely Duchess - but Catherine glowed with happiness and radiance as she still does. Long may it last. Here is wishing Princess Charlene genuine happiness in her married life, and a long healthy and fulfilled life. Princess Grace would have been so proud to have such a serenely graceful and lovely daughter-in-law.

For those comparing Charlene and Kate, enough. They are two very different women, marrying two very different men, and each is entitled to have their big day. It is Charlene's turn to shine. So stop sounding so bitter and smug.

She looked botoxed and drugged. And that lip job was stupid. As for the bad remarks about Albert I think he looked very good and I've seen interviews where he was very intelligent and actually very charming too. How come she still doesn't speak French? Compare this fact to Willem and Maxima's very first interview after their engagement where Maxima spoke fluent Dutch. Embarrassing for Charlene. I guess she's not up for the job hence her visible anxiety. I enjoyed the show, especially the red carpet walk (with some hideous dresses) and the offspring of Caroline and Steph, such nice children, Alexandra of Hannover taking the cake for cuteness and Charlotte is almost too pretty.

Not the happiest bride I've ever seen. I married a "commoner", and I was totally enthralled! Also, all those princes and kings and princesses.....great wealth does not necessarily buy great looks does it? sorry.

Did anyone notice, after the flower dedication ceremony, when they were driving back to the palace: she didn't want to wave to the crowd. He had to keep on giving her a signal so she can wave. Even with that, she kept her arm half way up. The wedding was beautiful, but something seems to be bothering her. He seems to be have been more enthusiastic about it than she was.

Oh Dear. They are not tears of joy are they? She looks about as happy as I was at my previous wedding! Doesn't bode well, does it when she has her passport conviscated so she can't do a runner!

Geez, what have they never kissed before?
Click to rate     Rating   132
1) She does look lovely. 2) He never seems to kiss her with any passion , even accounting for decorum ( in yesterday's photo he was looking right past her when he kissed her). 3) Princess Caroline's pretty daughter Charlotte is the double of her when she was younger. 3) Does anyone else think that Naomi Campbell's face looks like she has had ' work' ?

Princess Charlene is the prettiest bride i have seen in a very long time and her dress just as pretty.good luck to the both of them

I really like that the bridesmaids are local girls, instead of children of various rich friends. And that they're wearing national costumes.

Pretty mediocre compared to Wills & Catherine's wedding. And the fact she had her passport confiscated and was stopped from fleeing the country is interesting at best. Lovely dress though.

Beautiful, exquisite; a worthy successor to inherit the Grace Kelly mantle. I really hope that they have a happy marriage, and that in x years time we won't be looking back at these pictures and saying "it was doomed from the start...".

Why the need to compare Kate and Charlene? Maybe the reason Charlene's looking a bit overwhelmed is because she's not so obviously fond of the attention she's getting as Kate is.

I think it has dawned on her just what she has taken on. It is a shame that such negative press came about in Le Monde hindering what should be one of the happiest days of her/their lives. Nobody is made of steel and after a while, it must really get to you.

Anon,London. Want to borrow my specks you must be out of your mind to even compare her to our Kate no comparison at all ,both beautiful I am sure Kate will be a asset to our country with her pleasing personally, so forget the dress and look to the future.

I wouldn't trade places with her for anything. I actually feel geniuely sorry for her. I hope I'm wrong and today was just normal pre-wedding jitters. On a slightly different note, it is obvious that the Kelly gene, in the looks department, hasn't passed on to the following generations of the Grimaldis'.

Yet again we are represented by Prince Edward wearing a military looking uniform resplendent with medals. Has he ever done anything to earn these? Or is it just because of his family connections?

She looks beautiful. I hope she finds happiness. From the pictures I sense that she is a trapped bird in a gilded cage.

She looks so beautiful and yet so unhappy, there is no sparkle in her eyes . I think she should have carried on running last week this is a marriage that seems doomed

I think Princess Charlene looks beautiful in her gorgeous dress. Prince Albert has now got his blonde grace kelly lookalike, with an athletic figure - just perfect breeding material for his legitimate heir and hope for the future for a glamorous Monaco. Unfortunately i think reality will kick in and all sides will realise that dreams do not mirror reality! I hope that they have happy futures either together or apart!

Well and truely trapped now Charlene, hope it works out for you! Whats with all the white navel oufits?

Stunningly beautiful dress and bride. Yet there is no glow as with most brides, not even an inner smile despite nerves. She looks like a lamb to the slaughter. I hope I am wrong and wish her well.

Not what I would call a joyous occasion!

Charlene's dress is beautifully classical and understated, she looked lovely, yet dazed and sad: she and her Prince looked like emotionless actors performing their parts, devoid of love or passion. One can believe the press that she tried to run back to South Africa days before the wedding.

Beautiful dress spolied by insufficient lining with no bra. Beautiful lady, but hardly regal!

She looked LOVELY!! Shame she didn't smile more. I wish them much happiness Why is our Prince Edward wearing a naval uniform? And why do all the white uniforms look ill-fitted?

I am sure she is a very nice person, but something just isnt rite with her. She either, is not happy, has no personality, or just doesnt like to smile. She just seems to have that people are beneath me attitude. I surely hope not. Princess Stephanie's children are a very nice looking bunch..
