A magnitude 7.4 earthquake shook northeast Japan late on April 7, leaving three people dead, in one of the largest aftershocks since a magnitude 9.0 quake and tsunami wreaked havoc on the region.
The tremor -- which registered a strong 6 in Sendai and a strong 5 in Morioka on the Japanese scale -- rekindled anxiety among the already quake-shocked population and dealt a blow to recovery operations. "It shook terribly, just like it did that time," one local said, comparing the late-night temblor to the March 11 disaster.
"It hit just as I was going to bed," a 65-year-old Sendai housewife who lives on the sixth floor of a seven-story apartment block told the Mainichi. "It was completely dark, and so many things fell on the floor there was nowhere left to step. I thought it was just another aftershock, but it shook so much. I'm still upset," she continued in a trembling voice.
At the Mainichi Newspapers' Sendai Bureau, items dropped from desks and shelves in the quake that lasted more than a minute. Just after the tremor, all the lights in the surrounding office and apartment buildings went out at once, only battery-powered emergency lights remained. A set of traffic lights nearby also went out, forcing drivers to creep through the intersection.
A resident of the Wakayanagi district of Kurihara, Miyagi Prefecture -- where the quake also registered a strong 6 -- was contacted by the Mainichi just after the temblor and said he had been startled by the "violent shaking, so similar to March 11.
"But it was shorter than that one," the 40-year-old continued. "The dresser fell over and the glass door in our dish cabinet broke. It's gone pitch black, and the seven of us have lit candles. We're all wrapped in blankets now."
At a primary school-turned refugee center in the Oshima area of Kesennuma, the quake shook people out of their beds.
"The gym was really shaking, and I jumped straight up," one 71-year-old refugee told the Mainichi soon after the tremor. "They'd just got the traffic lights working again yesterday, and they're out again. I can also hear fire truck sirens nearby."

東日本大震災：宮城で震度６強 「あの時と同じ揺れ」 被災地、停電相次ぐ
◇津波の恐怖も再び
東日本大震災から２７日。東北地方を再び強い揺れが襲った。７日深夜、仙台市などで震度６強、盛岡市などで震度５強を観測した地震は、復興に向け歩み始めていた被災地に追い打ちをかけた。「あの時と同じような激しい揺れだった」。自宅で、避難所で、被災者たちは再び不安を募らせた。
■宮城
７階建てマンションの６階に住む仙台市宮城野区の主婦、飯島光井さん（６５）は「ちょうど寝たところだった。真っ暗の中、置物が落ちてきて足の踏み場もない」と突然の揺れに驚いた様子。「また余震だと思ったのだが。大きい揺れだったので動揺している」と声を震わせた。
仙台市青葉区の市中心部にある毎日新聞仙台支局では、机や棚の上のものが落ち、小刻みで激しい揺れが１分以上続いた。ビル２階の支局から屋外に退避すると、一帯のマンションやオフィスビルの電気は非常灯を残して一斉に消えた。近くの交差点では信号が消え、通行する車がスピードを落としてそろりと走っていた。
仙台市と同じく震度６強を記録した栗原市若柳の会社員、鹿野勝義さん（４０）は「３月１１日と同じくらいの激しい揺れで驚いたが、前回よりは短かった。タンスが倒れ、食器棚のガラス戸も割れているようだが、停電になって家の中は真っ暗。家族７人がろうそくをともして、一緒に毛布にくるまっている」と話した。
気仙沼市の大島にある避難所「市立大島小学校」に避難している白幡洋一さん（７１）は「体育館が大きく揺れて、跳び起きた。昨日復旧したばかりの信号も消えている。周りでは消防車のサイレンの音も聞こえる」と驚いていた。
大震災で福島県南相馬市から宮城県名取市に避難し、代表を務めるＮＰＯ法人の事務所にいた言語聴覚士の谷地（やち）ミヨ子さん（５２）は「細かい揺れから突然、大きな横揺れに変わって本が降ってきた。とても怖くて主人にしがみついた。福島第１原発では知り合いもたくさん働いているので、新たな被害が出ないか心配だ」と話した。
松島町では、爆発が起きたような「ドーン」という大きな音とともに揺れ始め、激しい縦揺れが約１分続いた。停電し暗闇の中、「沿岸部にいる方は避難してください」という防災無線が何度も響いた。
町内の高台にある駐車場は地震後すぐ、避難してきた約１００台の乗用車や消防車で埋まった。家族７人で逃げてきたという男性は「自宅は沿岸部。前回の津波でも床下浸水でおさまってはいたが、怖くてすぐに飛び出してきた」。逃げる途中で足をけがしたという高齢の男性が手当てを受けていた。
■福島
地震発生時、約５０人が避難している福島市の県立福島高では、就寝中の被災者たちが跳び起き、布団の上でしゃがみこんで揺れが収まるのを待ち続けた。すでに消灯しており、暗い中でざわめきが聞こえたという。ようやく揺れが収まると、地震を報じるテレビの前に人だかりができた。
南相馬市小高区から避難してきた男性（２８）は「またこんな揺れが来て怖かった。地震から１カ月近く過ぎたのに油断できない」と話し、携帯電話で災害情報を念入りにチェックしていた。
■岩手
岩手県災害対策本部によると８日午前０時半現在、県内全域が停電した。けが人などの情報は入っていないという。盛岡市内では、ドドドと音と震動の後、揺れが襲った。数秒後に電気が消え、飲食店では棚にある物を押さえようとする従業員がいた。
