- Multiplication tables and/or number lines
- 1Complete the first problem with your child. Ask your child to verbally explain each step as she completes it. If she needs further explanation, work with her on a few more problems. Remind her to refer to class notes or the textbook for help with concepts.
- 2Break the assignment down into manageable chunks. For example, if the homework assignment is 20 problems, have the student complete the first five and take a break while you check his work. This way, you are not hovering over him while he works, but managing his effectiveness from a distance.
- 3Use visual aids such as multiplication tables or number lines. Giving your child an opportunity to see the numbers as she counts helps her memorize math facts and cuts down on frustration.
- 4Develop a game, use real life examples, or invent an incentive to help your child be excited about math. For example, if the assignment is about percents, talk about shopping or giving a tip at a restaurant--or have your child explain the concept to you.
