Romney wins presidential caucuses in Hawaii

WASHINGTON, March 14 (Xinhua) -- U.S. Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney has won the presidential caucuses in Hawaii, local media reported early Wednesday.

Romney won Hawaii with 45 percent against 25 percent for his strong rival Rick Santorum after 99 percent of the votes were counted.

Texas congressman Ron Paul won 18 percent, and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich trailed in the fourth spot with 11 percent.

“IT IS now clear this will be a two-person race between the conservative leader Newt Gingrich and the Massachusetts moderate.” So said the conservative leader Newt Gingrich to console himself after being trounced by Mitt Romney in the Florida primary in late January. But late January was an age ago in what America’s discombobulated pundits are now calling the topsiest-turviest primary season they can remember. As the four remaining candidates brace for elections in Arizona and Michigan on February 28th, all eyes are now on the two-person race between Mr Romney, the plutocrat formerly known as the front-runner, and Rick Santorum, the social conservative and culture warrior who was never supposed to stand a chance.

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — On Monday, Mitt Romney finally got the Jon Huntsman endorsement he thought he’d been promised long ago.

During the 2008 presidential campaign, liberals who griped about Sarah Palin’s conservative values got an introduction to another rising female GOP star: Michele Bachmann , the first-ever Republican congresswomen from Minnesota.

Bachmann announced her 2012 presidential bid in August after months of visits to early voting states like Iowa, where she later won the Ames Straw poll and has enjoyed early grass-roots support.

Many cable viewers got to know the GOP firebrand when, in an October 2008 interview on MSNBC’s Hardball, Bachmann raised the specter of Sen. Joe McCarthy (R-Wis.) in expressing her belief that Barack Obama and many members of the federal government were “anti-American” and calling for Congress to investigate.
