 Mai Lan

27/10 Handling of Abuse in Chilean Church Questioned

By ALEXEI BARRIONUEVO and PASCALE BONNEFOY
Published: October 27, 2010

SANTIAGO, Chile — In April of last year, the Rev. Juan Esteban Morales, the head of a Roman Catholic parish here, visited Dr. James Hamilton at his clinic to make an unusual request: that he stop pursuing an annulment to his marriage.

Mercurio de Chile

It was not simply a matter of giving the marriage another try. Instead, Dr. Hamilton said he was warned that the annulment could “seriously affect the image” and health of one of Chile’s most influential and respected priests.

The reason: Dr. Hamilton wrote in his annulment request that the priest, the Rev. Fernando Karadima, started abusing him when he was 17, irreparably harming his relationship with his wife.

“No one has shown any compassion for me,” Dr. Hamilton said he told Father Morales, who is also a doctor. “My life has been destroyed, and I am surprised that someone like you, a colleague and a priest who has to protect Christian souls, would ask me to do something like that.”

The sheltering appears to be ending. On Wednesday, a judge ordered that Father Karadima, 80, once an unmatched spiritual leader with several bishops and dozens of priests as disciples, be interrogated in relation to charges of sexually abusing at least four young parishioners.

Many in Chile expect the Vatican, now investigating the charges, to rule on Father Karadima’s case any day, possibly imposing sanctions from expulsion from the priesthood to a prohibition against contact with young people.

As the scandal widens over Father Karadima’s actions, it has raised damaging questions about why the Chilean church hid the allegations for so long. This conservative nation has been shaken since the matter became public this year, staining respected church figures who protected Father Karadima.

For years, church officials, including Cardinal Francisco Javier Errázuriz, archbishop of Santiago, tried to shame accusers into dropping claims, refused to meet with them or failed to carry out formal investigations, according to interviews and court testimony.

The Catholic Church’s handling of abuse claims here offers a revealing look into how it has approached accusations against priests around the world. From Europe to the United States to South America, sexual abuse claims have caused a rippling crisis for the church, which for years tried to play down the concerns but more recently has shown a willingness to investigate and punish offending priests.

The first reports of abuse by Father Karadima reached Cardinal Errázuriz in mid-2003, months after the Chilean Bishops Conference issued procedures for handling cases of sexual abuse involving priests. In a letter to the cardinal, a young parishioner, José Murillo, told of the abuses he suffered, assuming an investigation would be opened.

The cardinal sent back a note, saying he was praying for Mr. Murillo, but failed to open a preliminary investigation. He chose not to do so, the cardinal said in an e-mailed response, because “unfortunately, I judged that the accusations were not credible at the time.”

But the Rev. Marcelo Gidi, a canon law expert, said that according to the Chilean church guidelines, a simple report of alleged abuses should have been enough. “Even if a church official hears of abuses through the news, there must be an investigation,” he said. “What should be judged as ‘credible’ enough to open an investigation is the good faith of the accuser, not the accusation itself.”

The concerns about Father Karadima stretched back even further. A publicist who grew close to Father Karadima stated in court that in 1984 he and a group of parishioners sent a letter to Archbishop Juan Francisco Fresno, who later became a cardinal, complaining about Father Karadima’s “improper conduct.” The publicist later found out through someone who worked with the cardinal that the letter had been “torn up and thrown away,” he said in a court statement.

Eleven years later, the approach appeared similar.

In 1995, after enduring Father Karadima’s sexual advances, Mr. Murillo, then 19, confronted the priest. Shortly afterward, Mr. Murillo said, an angry Father Karadima and one of his disciples, the Rev. Andrés Arteaga, who is now a bishop, cornered him in a meeting room.

“They humiliated me, and Arteaga treated me really badly, questioning my intelligence and telling me I should stop studying philosophy and take up theater, and that I should listen more closely to Karadima,” Mr. Murillo said.

Father Karadima had asked Mr. Murillo to accompany him to his bedroom in the parish to confess, Mr. Murillo said. A bishop was there when they arrived. Mr. Murillo said Father Karadima pulled out a bottle of whiskey and gave him a glass “to relax me.”

The bishop, looking nervous, left. While Mr. Murillo told him about his life, the priest touched the young man’s leg and genitals, then opened the zipper of his pants and tried to masturbate him, he said.

“I stopped him and left crying,” Mr. Murillo said.

Bishop Arteaga did not respond to requests for comment made through a church spokesman. Multiple attempts to reach Father Karadima were also unsuccessful.

Around that time, a crisis was brewing in the marriage of Dr. Hamilton and his wife, Verónica. Dr. Hamilton, who once considered Father Karadima a father figure and a saint, broke down and told his wife that the priest began abusing him when he was 17. Father Karadima had such influence over him, he said, that the sexual contact continued for more than 15 years.

Without her husband’s knowledge, Mrs. Hamilton told the Rev. Adolfo García, a relative, of the abuses in 2004. Father García spoke with Cardinal Errázuriz about the matter, according to Mrs. Hamilton’s testimony, and in June of that year the cardinal appointed the Rev. Eliseo Escudero to conduct the first investigation into Father Karadima.

In 2006, Father Escudero made his report to the cardinal, stating that he believed “the accusers to be credible and suggesting certain courses of action.”

Yet Cardinal Errázuriz suspended the investigation for more than three years, to wait for new evidence and because he thought the allegations were beyond the statute of limitations, he said in a public letter last April.

In the meantime, the cardinal removed Father Karadima as head of the parish, naming Father Morales in his place, and consulted with the Vatican and two canon law experts. The church investigation finally resumed late last year, and in June the cardinal referred a 700-page file on the matter to the Vatican.

The Vatican spokesman, the Rev. Federico Lombardi, said the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith “took it upon itself to review the case” and sent it to a special committee, often set up in complex cases, to “be examined and judged.” He declined to say whether the Vatican knew of the case before 2009, but argued that Cardinal Errázuriz “is extremely cooperative in his relations with the congregation and promptly took the precautionary measures that are normally taken for the accused in such cases.”

Cardinal Errázuriz, 77, who is to retire shortly, said he made mistakes. “We are very clear now that if we were presented with a new case today we would do things much better,” he said in e-mailed responses to questions.

The fallout from the Karadima case has already begun. The Rev. Hans Kast, a priest who left Father Karadima’s parish in 2005 and is now chancellor of the Chilean Catholic Church, testified this year that he had witnessed sexual abuses by Father Karadima.

Beyond that, the Rev. Francisco Walker, president of the Ecclesiastical Tribunal, a Chilean church court, admitted this year that he had made a mistake by leaking Dr. Hamilton’s confidential annulment request to Bishop Arteaga and Father Morales; he resigned from the court in July.

Dr. Hamilton said that during his visit to the clinic, Father Morales had asked for “mercy,” and for him to drop the accusations because Father Karadima could not withstand such a shock. “I was so surprised that I asked him whether he believed me about the abuses,” Dr. Hamilton said. “He said that he did, and that’s why he was asking for mercy.”

Father Morales acknowledged the visit in court testimony, but said he had asked Dr. Hamilton to withdraw the accusations simply because they were not true.

Cardinal Errázuriz also said he had “powerful reasons” for rejecting various requests from Dr. Hamilton for a meeting on the issue in 2005, 2006 and 2009, adding that it “doesn’t mean his testimony had not been received through other official channels.”

In addition to the abuse victims, half a dozen men have testified in court proceedings that Father Karadima’s kisses and sexual advances to his closest followers were widespread and public. One of them, the Rev. Andrés Ferrada, stated that he witnessed these abuses as early as the mid-1990s, “but no one ever did anything about it.”

Hotel Review: Rafayel on the Left Bank, in London

By BRUCE HEADLAM
Published: October 22, 2010

Rafayel on the Left Bank may sound Parisian, but the hotel actually occupies several floors in a large apartment complex in Battersea, a former industrial area on the south bank of Thames in London. The neighborhood has enjoyed a real estate boom, along with the rest of the city, in the last few years, and the Rafayel, which opened in April, has an enviable location on the river. There’s LED lighting in the rooms, little paper at checkout and no plastic bottles or heated towel racks anywhere. The Rafayel advertises itself as “one of the world’s first environmentally-conscious luxury hotels.” Its mission, according to the developer, Iqbal Latif, is to reduce the carbon footprint of the average night’s stay by 25 percent without inconveniencing guests.

LOCATION

The Rafayel is mere yards from the London Heliport, and while that’s certainly executive-friendly, it also seems eco-hostile. The closest transit station is Clapham Junction, probably best known from the classic “Up the Junction” by Squeeze (“I never thought it would happen with me and the girl from Clapham”). You may have plenty of time to hum all the verses during a 15-minute slog from the train. (The hotel runs a free shuttle, but it ends at 8:30 p.m.)

ROOMS

The hotel rents rooms by square footage. I booked the 270-square-foot Yangtze Room (£330, with tax, about $518 at $1.56 to the pound, but available for £150 on the Rafayel Web site), which seemed palatial by the standards of London hotels. I was promised a view of the Thames — technically true, but only if I peeked between buildings. Inside, the look is modern, with dark wood and warm neutral paint, and there is so much gadgetry — including a digital readout of your carbon consumption — that unless you’re traveling with Bill Gates, you might need to call the front desk for help, as I did. The extremely comfortable beds are made by Hypnos, the British manufacturer said to supply the Queen, and there are enough pillows to build a scale model of Windsor Castle.

BATHROOM

The bathroom is epic, with a long mirrored wall, and a bidet. And the water pressure in the glass-walled shower (no tub) is glorious, like a rain forest waterfall, and probably the surest bet to raise your carbon footprint from that of eco-traveler to that of BP.

AMENITIES

Breakfast, continental (£10) or traditional British (£15), is served in Banyan on the Thames, a purple-lighted bar/restaurant/nightclub across a small courtyard. This being an English hotel, afternoon tea is served in the lobby daily and, this being an executive hotel, there’s a cigar bar and hookah lounge.

ROOM SERVICE

Room service is apparently still a difficult concept at the Rafayel. I arrived late — around 10:30 p.m. — to find that the restaurant had already closed. The front desk told me room service was available until midnight, but the kitchen disagreed. At that point, the minibar’s bag of chips or crisps or whatever they’re called started to look awfully good.

BOTTOM LINE

The Rafayel is designed as a kind of hotel version of an Apple Store, all minimalist, efficient and self-regarding. Right now, it is closer to Windows 95, with lots of bugs and the occasional blue screen. If you need to be in this part of London and are in the kind of business where you come and go by helicopter (say, real estate developer or paid assassin), the Rafayel is a sleek, pleasing choice. If you’ve come to see the sights, you may want to spend your money closer to the city center and plant a tree instead.

Restaurants’ Best Press: ‘Bill Clinton Ate Here’

By DAVID SEGAL
Published: October 25, 2010

BILL CLINTON has dined at Bukhara, an upscale restaurant in New Delhi, on just two occasions, but the afterglow of those visits has never worn off. The clientele, it seems, won’t let it.

Since that first meal, in 2000, so many customers have uttered some variation of “Give us what the president had,” that the restaurant has started serving a mixed-meat sampler — a one-off prepared for Mr. Clinton and his guests — as a nightly special. The Bill Clinton platter, as it is known, is an aromatic spread of mixed meats, lentils and oven-baked bread.

Price: 5,000 rupees, or about $110.

For those who can’t handle that much minced lamb and chicken tandoori, a night at Bukhara can still have a Clintonian cast. Just ask for “the Clinton table,” the six-seater said to be Mr. Clinton’s perch of choice in the middle of the restaurant, with an unhindered view of the open-air kitchen.
But be sure to call ahead.

“People come in all the time and ask for that table,” says Avinash Deshmukh, a manager at the ITC Maurya Hotel, where Bukhara is located. “The strange thing is we’ve never advertised the fact that Mr. Clinton has eaten here. Everybody just seems to know that when they walk in the door.”
It may sound improbable, given the junk-food associations once attached to the man’s name, but few phrases are more bankable to restaurants around the world than this: “Bill Clinton ate here.”

Somehow, the 42nd president has become an arbiter of international fine dining, conferring a sort of informal Michelin star just by showing up. He is doing for restaurants around the world what George Washington once did in America for places to sleep.

Mr. Clinton routinely pops up in guidebooks and newspaper articles about restaurants, invariably with the implication that a beloved gourmand has attached his seal of approval. If you travel enough, you will eventually hear a tip that goes something like: “When you’re in Madrid, try Casa Lucio. Bill Clinton ate there with the King of Spain.” Or “Check out Le Pont de la Tour in London. Bill Clinton loves it.”

How exactly did Mr. Clinton become earth’s No. 1 restaurant maven in the non-United States category?
It’s widely (and correctly) assumed that he has good connections everywhere he visits, so he’s unlikely to wind up at a dud. More than most celebrities, he seems like a person who appreciates good food, and before he had heart surgery, he was known for his wide-ranging appetite.
And when Mr. Clinton visits a restaurant, everybody in the room knows it. Douglas Band, an aide who frequently travels with Mr. Clinton, and who fielded questions for this article on his behalf, says his boss introduces himself to every diner, as well as every waiter and every kitchen staff member. He will always pose for photographs and sign guest books. Someone from his staff will send a thank-you note a few days later.
Anyone who trails in Mr. Clinton’s dining path will eat well, but should know that his taste in restaurants, when he actually selects them, runs to the bright, lively and unfussy. The white table cloth, 10-course prix fixe experience is not his style.
For health reasons, he is a vegan these days, and during recent travels on behalf of Democratic candidates his diet has included miso barley soup, black bean burritos and cauliflower and potato curry, typically prepared by a member of his entourage. Overseas, however, he’s been know to stray.
“He had the filet mignon last time he was here, four months ago,” says Javier Blázquez, the son of the owner of Casa Lucio. “The doctors tell him not to eat it, but he does anyway.”
Celebrity endorsements of every variety — movie stars, famous athletes and anyone else with a high Q rating — provide bragging rights for all kinds of restaurants. It’s also true that Mr. Clinton’s patronage in the United States has provided p.r. boosts for places like Il Mulino in Manhattan and Georgia Brown’s in Washington.
But when it comes to Bill Clinton and overseas restaurants, the upside is on a far greater scale. Managers and owners from Beijing to Iceland and points between say an appearance by Mr. Clinton can be transformational, launching an obscure restaurant to fame and cementing the reputation of well-known favorites. Best of all, the imprimatur seems to last for years.
“We had 25 people from Sweden in here last night,” says Detlef Obermuller, owner of Gugelhof, a Berlin restaurant that was host to Mr. Clinton and Chancellor Gerhard Schröder in 2000.
“I asked one of them, ‘How do you know about this place?’ ” Mr. Obermuller said. “And she took out a newspaper clipping out of her pocket. I can’t read Swedish, but she told me it was all about Bill Clinton eating here. And that meal was a decade ago.”
Not that Mr. Obermuller has forgotten any of the details. He and his staff were given a mere 20-minute heads-up by German security before Mr. Clinton and company arrived. News of the dinner then spread quickly on radio and television, and by the time dessert was served, a crowd of 2,000 had gathered on the sidewalk to greet the man who had declared “Berlin is free!” in a 1994 speech before the Brandenburg Gate.

As Mr. Clinton left, a scrum of journalists swarmed into Gugelhof, scrounging up quotes and details for articles. Amid the chaos, all the cutlery, plates and glasses on Mr. Clinton’s table disappeared. One of the cheekier reporters took the dinner check. (It included Mr. Clinton’s order of choucroute, an Alsatian dish of sauerkraut, beef, pork and potatoes.) The next day, a German newspaper ran an image of the check on its front page.

Mr. Clinton never asked to be the foreign restaurant anointer in chief, but because he has the job, a glaring irony must be noted: He doesn’t research where he eats. In fact, he rarely chooses the restaurants.
“I wish I could tell you there is more of a science to it,” Mr. Band said. “He’s so busy and has so much to do. It’s not like it’s that important to him.”
Typically, Mr. Band said, restaurant ideas come from a member of Mr. Clinton’s advance team, who consults a concierge. Convenience often weighs as heavily as flavor. One of the reasons that Mr. Clinton likes Bukhara, Mr. Band said, is that it’s on the ground floor of a hotel where Mr. Clinton often stays, which means he and his security entourage can eat there without snarling New Delhi traffic.
Other times, the restaurant choice is left to local dignitaries. Even in those instances, the decisions can be a little mysterious.
“Chancellor Schröder was here last week, and I asked him why he and Clinton ended up at Gugelhof that night,” Mr. Obermuller said. “He said he had no idea. He thought that someone in his government had selected this place, but that was all he knew.”
Good fortune, it seems, plays a surprisingly large role in the Bill Clinton international restaurant sweepstakes. Mr. Clinton helped a hot dog stand in Reykjavik called Baejarins Beztu Pylsur achieve worldwide acclaim after he stopped there during a visit to Iceland in 2004. But the ex-president nearly walked right by.
“I have this nice older woman who has been working for me for 30 years, and she saw Clinton, and she just shouted at him to stop and try one of our hot dogs,” said Gudrun Kristmundottir, the stand’s owner. “And he did.”
The next day, TV reporters and newspapers from all over the world were calling. And in 2006, Baejarins Beztu Pylsur (“city’s best hot dogs” in Icelandic) turned up on a list of the five best European food stalls in The Guardian newspaper in England. Inevitably, Mr. Clinton’s stop was noted.
“It was just unbelievable, the amount of attention,” Ms. Kristmundottir said. “I never understood all the fuss over a single hot dog.”
The fuss invariably translates into more customers and more money, but it can have downsides. Mr. Obermuller said that for months after Mr. Clinton’s visit, busloads of tourists would regularly stop by Gugelhof — not to eat, but to walk in and gawk.
“It was bad for a while,” he said. “A lot of people who live around here were really mad at us. They said we’d ruined the neighborhood.”
One warning for anyone dining à la Clinton: there is a lot of misinformation out there. Yahoo’s Travel site, for instance, implies that Mr. Clinton was one of the famous patrons of Kosebasi, a beloved kebab joint in Istanbul. Not true, says the restaurant’s manager, Piero Ciantra.
“But we had Chelsea Clinton here once,” he said. “She’s a vegetarian, so we made her kebab out of eggplant.”
The Clinton magic apparently extends to the former first daughter, too. A few days after her Kosebasi meal, a man who’d been in the restaurant that evening showed up and bought the chair in which she had sat.

Nhiều năm trước, anh mua được mảnh đất ngập mặn, nhiễm phèn rất nặng nằm ở ấp Long Thuận, Long Phước, quận 9, TP HCM.

Mối tình chóng vánh Uông Tiểu Phi - Từ Hy Viên mới bắt đầu hôm 30/9, khi hai người cùng tới dự sinh nhật An Dĩ Hiên (Ady An).

Reign of Assassins (tên tiếng Trung Jian Yu) tạm dịch Thời đại sát thủ, do hãng Galloping Horse và Hong Kong Media Asia phối hợp sản xuất. Phim có nguồn kinh phí lớn cùng dàn diễn viên kỳ cựu. Vai chính của phim do ngôi sao hành động Dương Tử Quỳnh (Michelle Yeoh) đảm nhận.

28/10/2010 15:28:00

Pizza Without the Dough

Recipes for Health

Lavash is a flatbread, a staple of meals in Iran, Azerbaijan, Armenia and Georgia. Until recently I’d never thought about using it as a pizza crust. It hardly resembles one — it’s much thinner. Still, I’ve found it’s a great way to put together something like a pizza for a quick lunch or dinner. And it’s the easiest pizza you’ll ever make.

When you bake it, lavash becomes crispy on the edges. If you let it go for too long in the oven, it will be crisp all the way through, like a cracker. Despite the texture, lavash makes a great vehicle for any number of healthy toppings. I like to combine a small amount of cheese — mozzarella, goat cheese or Gruyère — with vegetables. These I usually cook first, as lavash pizzas aren’t cooked at high heat like regular pizzas.

At Iranian markets, lavash is sold in sheets so big that half the bread dries out before you can finish it. As an alternative, Trader Joe’s now sells lavash in 9-by-12-inch sheets. Half of one makes a perfect serving.

Lavash Pizza With Tomatoes, Mozzarella and Goat Cheese

This is my favorite lavash pizza. It’s simple to throw together, and I love the way the flavor of the tomatoes intensifies during their short time in the oven.

1 9-by-12-inch piece of lavash
1/2 cup, tightly packed (2 ounces), grated or shredded fresh mozzarella
2 plum tomatoes (8 to 10 ounces), sliced
1/4 red onion, sliced (optional)
1/2 cup (2 ounces) crumbled goat cheese
1 to 2 teaspoons fresh thyme
Salt and freshly ground pepper
1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil

1. Heat the oven to 375 degrees, preferably with a pizza stone in it. Place the lavash on a baking sheet. Sprinkle the mozzarella over the lavash, and top with the tomato slices and onion. Arrange the goat cheese over and between the tomato slices. Sprinkle with thyme, salt and pepper. Drizzle on the olive oil, and place in the oven. Bake 15 to 20 minutes, until the lavash is crisp and dark brown on the edges. Remove from the heat and serve; or allow to cool slightly, then serve. Cut with a pizza wheel or scissors.

Yield: Serves two.

Advance preparation: This pizza takes minutes to throw together and should be assembled just before baking.
