OP-ED CONTRIBUTOR: A Confused Opinion

By RICHARD A. EPSTEIN

Published: June 28, 2012

THE stunner yesterday was that Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr., joined by the Supreme Court’s four most liberal justices, wrote the majority opinion that upheld the individual mandate in President Obama’s signature Affordable Care Act, which requires Americans to obtain health insurance or pay a penalty. In an ironic twist, the chief justice simultaneously accepted the conservative argument that Congress’s power to regulate interstate commerce did not include the power to regulate economic inactivity, like a decision not to purchase health care. The court ruled 5 to 4 on that point, with the chief justice joined by the court’s four other conservative justices.

MOVIE REVIEW Sometimes Attraction Becomes a Slow Dance Around the Subject

‘Take This Waltz,’ Directed by Sarah Polley

Margot (Michelle Williams) and Daniel (Luke Kirby) meet on a trip to Louisbourg, Nova Scotia, site of an 18th-century French fort and a present-day National Historic Park. They sit together on the flight home to Toronto, and the attraction between them is obvious and mutual. This makes it a bit awkward when they discover, sharing a cab from the airport, that Daniel lives across the street from the charming, cozy row house where Margot lives with her husband, Lou (Seth Rogen).

So the Supreme Court — defying many expectations — upheld the Affordable Care Act, a k a Obamacare. There will, no doubt, be many headlines declaring this a big victory for President Obama, which it is. But the real winners are ordinary Americans — people like you.

How many people are we talking about? You might say 30 million, the number of additional people the Congressional Budget Office says will have health insurance thanks to Obamacare. But that vastly understates the true number of winners because millions of other Americans — including many who oppose the act — would have been at risk of being one of those 30 million.

ĐỒNG HÀNH CÙNG CHÚNG TÔI!

Monday, 25th June 2012

Hillary Clinton’s Last Tour as a Rock-Star Diplomat

Jessica Dimmock/VII, for The New York Times

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton at a senior staff meeting in Washington.

By STEVEN LEE MYERS

Published: June 27, 2012 181 Comments

On May 3, the day after an artful deal to end the diplomatic crisis over Chen Guangcheng, China’s now-famous dissident, unraveled spectacularly, Hillary Rodham Clinton followed a scrum of Chinese ministers around an exhibition of clean cookstoves. These are safer, portable alternatives to the crude stoves used by hundreds of millions of women in the developing world — at grave risk to themselves, their children and the planet. Not long after becoming secretary of state in 2009, Clinton took up the cookstove cause, one of what she describes as “smart power” issues — though skeptical veterans of American foreign policy tend to deride them as soft more than smart.
